2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E pricing starts at $51,495 in Canada, $43,895 in the US.
The Mustang Mach-E GT goes for $61,995 in the US, $85,995 in Canada.
Canada only gets the GT Performance Edition whereas the US offers a “base” GT.
It’s crazy what a little colour and some serious performance can do to almost alter an opinion completely. I’ve not been very kind to the Ford Mustang Mach-E in the past, concluding that the praise it had received was mostly based on the fact that there are still too few EV options on the market. I’ve revised my position slightly thanks to the recently tested GT Performance Edition.
My first contact with the Mach-E was very brief and rushed. I commented that the dashboard was nice but that some of the materials were slightly low-rent. My second round with the Mach-E did little to help my initial impressions as, after sampling many other EVs between the encounters, I found it to be way over-priced and underwhelming in most other respects. And, it was white.
Cyber Orange!
I set aside most of my misgivings about the Mach-E when I picked up the GT Performance Edition (PE). The first reason was colour. Draped in Cyber Orange, fender flares included, the electric Ford went from bland to alluring. The blacked-out trim, black front “grille”, and deeper front bumper served to inject some personality onto the otherwise rental-fleet-looking SUV. I know, I’m really mean… The standard-for-Canada PE package with the GT features 20-inch wheels, among other items, which further accentuate this Mach-E’s purpose.
Ford, here’s a tip: Offer an optional GT Appearance package. Retail it for $4,500 wheels and trim included (no seats or badges), and make more money.
Still a Mach-E on the inside
Unfortunately, the PE does little to improve the cabin’s appearance. To be clear, it’s not that the Mach-E’s interior is terrible, it simply does not look like it belongs in a nearly $90,000 vehicle. With the exception of the Ford Performance sport front seats and a few suede inserts, every other aspect is unchanged. Oh, wait, GT is stamped on the armrest…
The central 15.5-inch touchscreen display is the focal point for all manners of infotainment and comfort controls. If a little daunting at first, navigating the menus quickly becomes second nature.
GT Performance Edition power
Another mild letdown is the transmission selector wheel but, as passion-sapping as the turning the wheel to “D” is, all, and I do mean all, is forgiven once underway. The Mach-E GT PE is fitted as standard with AWD via a dual-motor layout. For this version, the front motor is upgraded and with the 91-kWh battery (88-kWh usable), produce a massive 480 horsepower and 634 lb.-ft. of torque. A solid launch will see the GT land a 3.5-second 0-60mph time with an extra 0.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h. This is fast.
Like the regular Mach-E, the GT PE is equipped with drive modes (Whisper, Engaged, Unbridled) but thanks to the power and a different tune, they serve a greater purpose in this version. The most engaging mode is Unbridled. It’s programmed to deliver maximum power for as long as possible along with a generous amount of regenerative braking. This combination of thrust and natural-feeling mechanical deceleration is fantastically addictive. Also, the 1-Pedal mode remains a great way to get around in town.
The 2022 Mustang Mach-E Performance Edition is setup with MagneRide dampers. This utterly brilliant suspension is capable of managing the vehicle’s 5,000+lbs be it for comfort in town despite the 20-inch wheels, or when attacking your favorite onramp’s apex. As far as driving controls go, the Mach-E is on par with most EVs. In other words, the steering feel is disconnected but precise and when the big pedal is stomped on, the oversized Brembo brakes (up front) generate more than adequate stopping power.
Charging and range
As tested, the Mach-E GT PE offers up to 418 km of range on paper. Despite a 98% SoC, the max indicated range was 341 km, or roughly a 20% drop due to ambient temperatures.
Charging times are average at best as it’ll need about 8 hours on a 240-volt Level 2 home charger. On a Level 3 50-kW DC fast charger, the Mach-E would only accept 22kW even though it is rated at 150kW. On the latter, the battery should normally go from a 10% to 80% SoC in about 45 minutes.
EV round up
Among the Mustang Mach-E’s currently available competitors, namely the Tesla Model Y, Polestar 2, Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and the Volkswagen ID.4, the Ford is average is all respects.
2022 Midsize Electric SUV Comparison Test
The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT PE, on the other hand, is far more enticing, more so than its direct competitor, the Tesla Model Y Performance. The problems for both of these are the incoming Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV GT which will match the performance and likely be far less expensive. And in my opinion, vastly more charismatic than both.
