Part of the reason it moves so slowly is that it takes time to introduce the 20 or so main characters in the film, and it takes some time to show each of these characters being hacked to death with swords.

Audience Member The story elements involved in the much longer manga are largely ignored, but as a purely visual work, it is stunning and dreamlike. The battle sequences are more than satisfying and I would still recommend that anime fans and fans of the manga see this one.
